Wedensday, May 16th is the annual international (Bicycle) ‘Ride of Silence,’ and it will be observed locally by more than a hundred and fifty area bicycle club members and any others who wish to participate, with a seven-mile slow, silent bicycle ride through downtown Sarasota. The purpose of this ride is to honor all killed and injured bicyclists, and to make motorists more aware of bicyclists and of their right and need to travel along public roadways.
The riders will gather at Robarts Arena, 3000 Ringling Boulevard starting at 6:30 pm. And after an invocation and a bag-pipe playing, the riders will leave in groups at 7:00 pm behind clearly-marked and lighted vehicles that have signage to show the reason for the ride. They will then travel west along Main Street, then south along South Orange, and back to Main Street via South Osprey. All participants should have front and rear flashing lights and they must wear helmets. Everyone is welcome!
